Summary:
After author and activist, Miko Peled, hosted the two part webinar series, “What do they teach our children? Israel’s Intervention in American Social Studies Curriculum”, we received a huge amount of interest and follow-up on the subject of intervention and influence that Zionist and pro-Israel interest groups have on our institutions of primary and secondary education. Investigating this phenomenon beyond just the US and into Palestinian and Israeli classrooms, Miko Peled has expanded this webinar series in order to examine the direction and substance of school curriculum we find in the modern Israeli and Palestinian K-12 environment, while contrasting them with what we know about the lopsided US curriculum, as it pertains to the topics of Palestine, Israel, and how each is framed.
In this online event held via Zoom, Miko Peled will host a round table discussion featuring some of the foremost scholars, educators, and activists on this subject, in order to tackle this critical topic and address the following questions:
- What is the framing of Palestine and Israel in each society’s respective educational environment?
- What techniques are employed by textbook publishers and governmental agencies to present a particular narrative within the curriculum?
- What effect does this have on each respective society?
- How can teachers and activists be a countervailing force?
